GM steering problems prompt 1.3M recalls

2010 Cobalt2010 CobaltFirst Toyota, then Hyundai, Nissan, Suzuki and Daihatsu publicly issued vehicle recalls for various problems. Now GM has issued its own recall of 1.3 million cars for power steering problems related to its Chevy Cobalt (2005-10), Pontiac G5 (2005-7), as well as 2005-6 Pontiac Pursuit (sold in Canada) and 2005-6 Pontiac 4 (sold in Mexico).
Fourteen accidents so far have been connected with the power steering failures. GM maintains the vehicles are safe to drive but will repair the steering mechanism.
GM blamed the problem on a supplier with ownership ties to Toyota, citing the system didn’t meet GM’s requirements.
